How to Retrieve Your Forgotten WiFi Password

WiFi is a crucial asset of the people in the present times as it allows computers, smartphones and other smart devices to connect wirelessly. Each WiFi router has its own unique IP address and is secured with a password. Passwords can be changed anytime but if a person forgets their wifi password, then they will not be able to connect to the internet and the wireless service. But, fortunately, you can get access to your wifi through your computer by accessing the WiFi router’s IP address and its setting page. One drawback could be that you cannot regulate the wifi settings and password through your mobile device.

Ways to Recover a Lost or Forgotten WiFi Password

It’s like duck soup to get access to your WiFi password if you are using the password that comes along with the router. To get your password, you can look for the password in the documents and the manual given with the router package. In case you cannot find the wifi documents, you can check for the password at the lower back of the router as most router manufacturing companies stick the password near the ‘SSID’, and the password has both the uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers.

On Windows

If you had changed your WiFi password from the initial password that comes along with it, then you have some different steps to follow. To get access to your password, you will need a computer or laptop. This method is for Windows systems. But before beginning, you should mind that your system should be connected to the wifi for which you want to obtain the forgotten password. You cannot obtain your password if you are connected to ethernet (LANs). Keeping these points in mind, click on the WiFi icon located on the bottom right corner of the taskbar which will open the WiFi menu. Then click on the ‘network and internet setting’ which will open a list of options on the left side of the screen and there click on the ‘WiFi’ tab.

Next, click on the ‘change adapter options’ located under the RELATED SETTINGS. And you will see the Control Panel page open up. Then click on your current WiFi network, with a monitor-shaped icon and green bars representing the WiFi network. A list of options will open up. Click on the ‘status’ option that opens up a page and click on the ‘wireless properties’ option that will appear at the centre of the screen.

On top of the window, you’ll find the ‘security’ window, click on it and then open the ‘Network security key’ page, Check the show characters box under the network security key. You will find black dots inside the network security key, but once you click on the security key the black dots will show you the password.

On Mac

If you have a Mac system, then you have the advantage that you won’t need WiFi connection to find its password. You can click on the ‘Finder’ app. Once it opens, on the top left section of your screen you’ll find the ‘go’ option on the menu bar. Click on it and it will drop-down a list of options from where you’ll have to click on ‘utilities’. It will open up a new page with different sets of options. Click on the ‘keychain access’ which has a bunch of keys as its icon. You should now be able to see the keychain list and locate the network name that you see when your Mac system gets connected to the WiFi. Double-click on your network name and when the attributes page opens, click on ‘show password’ at the bottom. When the system asks to enter the input, enter your administrator password which is the password you use to open or log-in to your MacBook. You’ll get your WiFi password if you enter your administrator password correctly.

Through IP Address

In case you cannot access the WiFi password through the above mentioned ways, you can find your WiFi IP address. To know your WiFi’s IP address, (Windows) click on the WiFi icon on the taskbar > network & internet settings > view your network properties, and you’ll get to see the IP address on that page. To know your Wi-Fi  IP address on Mac, click on system preferences on Apple menu > network > Advanced > TCP/IP and you will get access to see the IP address. Once you have found out your IP address,  open your browser and enter your Wi-Fi’s IP address. A new page will open up where you have to fill the credentials like username and password. If logged in correctly, you will find a ‘Wi-Fi’ or ‘wireless’ option on the left side of the screen. After clicking on this option, you will find a page open up with SSID, security type and password.
